It was after eight in the morning when Sophia’s phone rang, and she groaned as she leaned over to answer it. Hadn’t she just fallen asleep?

When she actually grabbed her phone and looked at it, it felt like someone had dumped a bucket of ice water down on top of her head. It had been a long time since Sophia had seen that number, and if that number was calling her, it certainly would be an emergency. No one called someone they were indebted to just to chat, certainly.

“Hello?” She eventually answered before it went to voicemail, since whatever he had to say, she wanted to hear it.

The voice on the other end was speaking quietly, in Farsi. Wherever he was, he was perhaps a wall or a locked door away from being caught in the conversation. “Jade accessed your file this afternoon. Your brother’s file wasn’t touched. Nothing was altered, but I thought you should know.”

The idea that Jade was now looking for her did not settle well with Sophia. At all. She was not going to get caught again, not this time. “Do you have any other information you can give me? Other than to tell me to run like hell?”

“Strictly speaking, that wouldn’t be information, it would be advice. But if you’ll take it, that would be about what I would give you.” He sighed, and she could hear the phone move against his face as he nervously checked to see if he was being watched. “I don’t know how far back the three of you go, and I don’t want to know, but whatever you did to piss her off, it was effective. They sent two junior Hunters after the redhead that Barrett and Maggie went after last year. They picked you up on a surveillance tape from the hotel where they’re staying. If it’s advice you want, I’d say stay off spy cameras and find a dark hole to hide in until Jade thinks you’ve moved on.”

“Got it.” She added quickly, and quietly, since she realized that Darius might still be home and that he might overhear. “Well, be careful. Thanks for the tip.”

“Thanks?” He questioned quietly, and she could hear a note of real suspicion in his voice. “Who are you and what have you done with the bitch who decided I wasn’t worth killing?” Haroun heard a lot of things from Sophia over the years, but ‘thanks’ had never been one of them.

“Excuse my manners.” She snipped, though she had to roll her eyes. Obviously someone like Haroun would expect no such courtesy from someone like her. They were supposed to be at odds, after all. “I’ve had a rough couple of days. I’m sure it will wear off soon.”

“I’m sure it will. If I find out any more, I’ll text you.” He was about to wish her well, but she could hear him stop short, since she would’ve known he was lying anyway.

“Good.” She didn’t hesitate to hang up on him first.
